Archaeologists explore southern Moroccan oases in search of remnants of Jewish history

A

rchaeologists in Morocco have uncovered Jewish artifacts and Hebrew manuscripts in the city of Tata, according to the National Institute of Archaeology and Heritage.

Led by Dr. Sagheer Mabrouk, a research professor at the institute, the team is conducting excavations at the Takadert Synagogue until Tuesday as part of the Archaeological and Anthropological Research Program on Moroccan Jewish Heritage.

The excavations at the site led to significant archaeological discoveries..

The Hebrew texts, in particular, offer valuable insights into the history of Jewish communities in southern Morocco and broader Moroccan history, the institute stated.

In 2021, the Moroccan government launched a program to restore numerous Jewish archaeological sites, making Morocco the first country in the Arab world to allocate public funds for this purpose.

Although the exact dating of the site remains to be determined, experts emphasize its significance for understanding the Judaeo-Moroccan heritage of the region.

“It’s urgent to preserve these vulnerable sites that are at risk of being lost,” said Dr. Sagheer Mabrouk of Morocco’s National Institute of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (INSAP).
